Tago Mago, 744 High Street, Thornbury, Melbourne
$5 donation to the chicken workers. They won, so they don’t need a strike fund anymore. But they missed out on two weeks pay, so let’s help ‘em up with that.
As a one-off type o’ thing, Orlando is travelling up to Thornbury where the best op-shops are, and the spirit of generosity apparently runs free! We’re going to be fundraising for the striking chicken workers in Melbourne’s West, and we’re gonna bleed you gays for an unprecedented $10 each $5 to help out with this.
We’ll be playing the usual mix of indie / hip hop / post-punk / new wave, but in the music pubby surrounds of Tago Mago in Thornbury. Remember when we used to be at The Vic? Maybe it will be a bit more like that?
It starts at 8pm and goes till 1am. There is also a kitchen at Tago Mago that is open until 9pm, in case yr into that sort of thing.
Want to know more about what we’re fundraising for?
The striking worker’s at Baiada Poultry are hyper-exploited, some of the workers there have been earning as little as $10/hr doing a job that is often dangerous and unpleasant. We think everyone deserves a decent wage for a decent day’s work. And so we fully support these workers taking matters into their own hands and walking out until they get the pay and conditions they are asking for.
But to keep these workers going on the picket line as they battle the baddies at Baiada, we need to help them out. They still need to pay the bills and they’re not getting any income while they’re out on strike. So we can surely listen to some music, get drunk and give a little in the process, right? Right!?!
Orlando calls this strike fund FUN!

Orlando will turn Gore this Halloween/Melbourne Cup Eve. Monster’s will mash and the dancefloor will be door-knocking.
In the back room we’ll be playing the usual mix of indie, post-punk, hip-hop and new wave.
In the front bar, we’ll be going on a trans-Andean adventure through the trash, lo-fi sssshhhhuper-loco South American queer disco scene. Come see DJ Bennzo play the sudamericana divas Javiera Mena, Mamacita, Sofia Oportot, Cholita Sound and 80s new wave Gods of Rock en Español Los Prisioneros.
In the side bar it’s going to be ghost songs and post-punk all night. Music you can stare into your beer and howl like a werewolf to.
Prizes for the scariest outfit.
It will be bloody fun.
This is a not-for profit event and a childcare subsidy is available (call 0426501398).

Thanks for launchin’ with us on Saturday. We’ve got yr requests and we’ll be adding the songs to the Orlando Internet Radio playlist over the next few weeks.
Remember to take your Orlando magnet out of yr pocket/wallet/cleavage/bumbag, and put it on your fridge where you’ll see it. If you missed out on getting one, check the cafes and laundromats around the Inner North.
All the money we raised on Saturday goes to the Refugee Action Collective (Victoria). They need all the support they can get right now, and they happen to be putting on their own fundraiser this Saturday (10 September 2011) at The Victoria Hotel in Brunswick. It’s an impressive line up of bands, MCs and spoken word performers, so check it out.
And we at Orlando shall see you…soon.

About Orlando internet radio
It used to be that Orlando provided only five hours of indie/post-punk/new wave/hip hop music on the last Friday of the month. And you had to leave the house to hear it. Now your hair can remain uncombed and your pants can remain tracksuited. Orlando is now also a 24/7 internet radio station, offering Orlando-style music whenever and wherever you want it. Well, as long as you have access to the internet.
Just visit this website, at home, at work, on your phone, wherever, and click on the appropriate link to listen.
Orlando internet radio is different to normal radio. Let’s say it’s better! You can always find out what song is playing when you’re listening to it. Orlando internet radio is all-music, no talk, no commercials. Why don’t you see what we’re playing now?
Join us for the launch
Orlando has come out from under the hibernation blanket for one night only.
On Saturday the 3rd of September 2011, Orlando will be launching its new online radio venture. Offering Orlando-style music whenever and wherever you want it via the world wide web.
Its new, its brave, its something else.
Orlando has invited the outstanding talents DJ Jen Fonda and LA Salmon in the back room.
DJ Library Matters and DJ on Secondment will be in the front with some records, creating nostalgic moments and clunky cross fades.
Winter will be over, it will be spring. Let us all rejoice and remember what its like to be socially active.

we’re taking our cheer to the city for a north meets south explosion of gay love and wondrous dance moves that are possible only in the roomy warehouse space of http://thousandpoundbend.com.au/. nb: if you’re easily puffed there’ll be calming telemovies in the cinema upstairs.
we’ll be playing our favourite tracks from 2010, as well as indulging in all those overpl…ayed indie classics. we’re allowed to because:
a) its new years eve; and
b) just this once we’ve traded our screechy distorting speakers for a brilliant professional *blush* sound system.
tickets are $15 from the venue (presale) or online at Moshtix for $20+booking fee or $25 on the night: http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=42475&ref=moshtix
Gay Abandon will be:
- disability friendly
- not for profit (all proceeds to Equal Love)
- comfortable. we’re capping sales at 700 for safety and comfort so make sure you and your friends all have a ticket, and remember to bring them. no one wants to end up at the Exford on NYE. no one.
Also, we’ve organised a safe and generously sized alleyway for smokers that is closed off from the thoroughfare.

Orlando is taking February off to mourn the end of our time at the Victoria Hotel but will be reappearing at the Edinburgh Castle on 25th March.
We are pretty excited about the venue change, so hope to see you all there. It’s a $4 entry, and all proceeds go to activist campaigns. The January edition of Orlando raised over $1500 to the Melbourne Hands Off Wikileaks (HOWL) campaign group. Check out the Edinburgh Castle here: |

UNPRECEDENTED ORLANDO GIVEAWAYS: Hey all, Melbourne Queer Film Festival is on again from the 17-27 of March, and to celebrate the MQFF has thoughtfully given us a double pass to The Regretters to give away, which is an Swedish doco on Orlando and Mikael, two of the earliest people to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Even more thoughtfully they have also given us a couple of tickets to Out In The Silence, an American doco about a popular 16 year-old jock who encounters intense homophobia when he comes out.
Just be the first through the door after 8pm on 25th March at the Edinburgh Castle to win them.
